Vol. 137 No. 1

Business of Seanad.

I have notice from Senator McGennis that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, she proposes to raise the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education to provide a new second level school for Castleknock, Dublin 15.

I also received notice from Senator Sherlock of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications to give further consideration to the application by South Community Television Group for a licence to operate a service side by side with Cork Multichannel, so as to provide an alternative legal system in the Cork area under the Broadcasting Acts.

I also received notice from Senator Roche of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Justice to outline the application of the Intoxicating Liquor Acts to wine licence sales from certain small retail outlets in Bray and Greystones, County Wicklow, and the threat posed to the outlets in question by the application of the law in a manner which is not general throughout the country.

I also received notice from Senator Kelleher of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht to provide funding for the acquisition of the old North Infirmary Hospital, Cork City, for use as a museum or cultural centre.

I also received notice from Senator O'Sullivan of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Finance to impose stricter control on activities of out-of-State shooters, particularly in regard to over-exploitation of irreplaceable migratory game birds.

I also received notice from Senator Reynolds of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications to allow the coal burner power station at Arigna, County Roscommon, to continue production until all the coal deposits in the area are exhausted.

I also received notice from Senator Ross of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Enterprise and Employment to carry out an immediate investigation into the life threatening explosion at Balleece Quarry in Rathdrum, County Wicklow and to suspend its operation until appropriate safety measures have been put in place.

I also received notice from Senator Daly of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications to intervene with An Post so as to ensure that Cranny Post Office, County Clare reopens.

I regard the matters raised by Senators McGennis, Sherlock, Roche, Kelleher, O'Sullivan, Reynolds and Ross as suitable for discussion on the Adjournment. I have selected Senator McGennis' and Sherlock's matters and they will be taken at the conclusion of business. Senators Roche, Kelleher, O'Sullivan, Reynolds and Ross may give notice on another day of the matters they wish to raise.

I regret that I have had to rule the matter raised by Senator Daly as not suitable for discussion on the adjournment on the grounds of lack of ministerial responsibility. It is a matter for An Post.
