Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 27 Oct 1993

Vol. 137 No. 13

Business of Seanad.

I have notice from Senator Cosgrave that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Enterprise and Employment to outline the steps being taken by his Minister of State regarding the proposed new bank charges.

I also received notice from Senator Doyle of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Health to ensure that the needle exchange and drug maintenance clinic at Baggot Street Hospital, Dublin 4, is carried out in such a way as to protect the residents of the area and their property from harassment, intimidation and general nuisance.

I also received notice from Senator Ross of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Foreign Affairs to allocate more funding to Co-operation North.

I also received notice from Senator Burke of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications to outline the circumstances which gave rise to the withdrawal of postal services from Ballyheane post office, Castlebar, County Mayo, and to take immediate steps to have the service reinstated.

I regard the matters raised by Senators Cosgrave, Doyle and Ross as suitable for discussion on the Adjournment. I have selected Senators Doyle's and Cosgrave's matters and they will be taken at the conclusion of business. Senator Ross may give notice on another day of the matter he wishes to raise. I regret that I have had to rule the matter raised by Senator Burke as not suitable for discussion on the Adjournment on the grounds of lack of ministerial responsibility. I call the Leader of the House.

Thank you a Chathaoirligh. Before the Order of Business, I propose a vote of sympathy for the families of all those who died in the carnage over the week-end. I propose that each party be given ten minutes to make a statement on the situation, if the House is agreeable.

Is that agreed?

Absolutely. I join with the Leader of the House in expressing sympathy to the relatives of all those who have died and those who are suffering in the North. I thank the Leader of the House for being so flexible as to make time available for a statement from each group in the House. Will the statements be made before the Order of Business?

Is it proposed to take those statements now?

I will take the Order of Business and then we will have the statements.

Is that agreed? Agreed.
