Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 24 May 1995

Vol. 143 No. 10

Business of Seanad.

I have notice from Senator Byrne that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry to review the operation of the European Communities (Fees for Health Inspection and Control of Fresh Meat) Regulations, 1995, in view of the impact and cost of the regulations on local authorities and abattoir operators.

I have also received notice from Senator Cosgrave of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Justice to establish a task force to tackle the increasing wave of crime as outlined in the recent survey carried out by RGDATA.

I have also received notice from Senator Rory Kiely of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Enterprise and Employment to provide assistance to the Neodata plant in County Limerick in order to save the recently announced job losses.

I have also received notice from Senator O'Kennedy of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Health to establish statutory funding for driving assessment training and advice for people with physical disabilities.

I have also received notice from Senator Honan of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications to allay the concerns of local people regarding the removal of asbestos waste from Portarlington power station, County Laois.

I regard the matters raised by Senators Byrne, Cosgrave, Kiely and O'Kennedy as suitable for discussion on the Adjournment. I have selected Senator Byrne's and Senator Cosgrave's matters and they will be taken at the conclusion of business. I regret that I had to rule the matter raised by Senator Honan as not suitable for discussion on the Adjournment on the grounds of lack of ministerial responsibility. The other Senators may give notice on another day of the matters they wish to raise.
