Vol. 146 No. 13

Adjournment Matters. - Trim (Meath) Community School.

My proposal is that proper school facilities should be provided in Trim, County Meath. St. Michael's CBS and the vocational education committee schools are amalgamating and are prepared to agree to a new school being provided. This proposal is not new; about 15 years has passed and very little progress has been made in relation to it. Substantial details for the proposal have been provided by the community and a measure of agreement has been reached with the Bishop of Meath to make a site available for the new school.

The conditions under which the children and teachers work are unacceptable. I would like the Minister of State, Deputy Allen, to indicate when it is envisaged that the matter will be progressed. The Valuation Office has been asked to provide a valuation which should be available in the near future. All involved would like to know if funds will be made available this year for the school. If not, when will the funds be available?

A number of meetings have taken place with the CBS and vocational education committee schools, the Taoiseach and the officials. Trim has waited for many years for proper facilities to be made available for the children and the teachers. I would like a firm commitment to the new development at the earliest possible date.

I thank Senator Farrelly for raising this matter. I would like to outline for the House the background to the situation in Trim community school. Agreement is in place for the provision of a new community school to replace the existing St. Michael's CBS and vocational schools in Trim, County Meath. At this stage the school is expected to cater for a longterm enrolment of 825 students and will comprise 4,950 square metres of accommodation. The planning and building unit of my Department is currently taking steps to acquire a suitable site in Trim for the development of the new school.

The Department has been informed that the Bishop of Meath is favourably disposed towards making the St. Michael's school site and property available for the new community school. The Valuation Office has been asked by the Department to make an assessment of the value of the property and when this has been received negotiations will begin with the Bishop's representatives for the purchase of the property. When the site has been acquired by the Department the question of appointing a design team to begin architectural planning will arise.

I stress that while every effort will be made to expedite the architectural planning of this project, the timing of release to contract for the building work will depend on the financial allocation for post-primary capital in 1997. At this early stage it is not possible to say when construction will begin but I will ensure no undue delays will take place in pursuing this matter.

The Seanad adjourned at 1.30 p.m. until 2.30 p.m. on Wednesday, 13 March 1996.
