Vol. 149 No. 14

Child Sex Tours Bill, 1995: Motion for Withdrawal.

I move:

That the order of the Seanad of 8 February 1996 for Committee Stage of the Child Sex Tours Bill, 1995, be discharged and that the Bill is hereby withdrawn.

I move this motion because the Government accepted my Bill and the Bill introduced by Deputies O'Donoghue and Ryan in the other House. The Sexual Offences (Jurisdiction) Bill, 1996 was passed by this House last night. That legislation contained the substance of my Bill and there is no longer any need for the Child Sex Tours Bill, 1995 to be on the Order Paper.

I thank Deputies Ryan and O'Donoghue for allowing me to incorporate the essence of my Bill into their Bill. It was fitting that the Bill was passed yesterday, on the 50th anniversary of the founding of UNICEF. When I told them last night that the Bill had passed during our Presidency of the European Union — this whole matter is an important topic within the European Union at the moment in view of the atrocities in Europe which we heard of during the summer — they were most grateful to the House and congratulated us on having passed it.

Question put and agreed to.
