Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 17 Dec 1997

Vol. 153 No. 5

Business of Seanad.

I have received notice from Senator Henry that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, she proposes to raise the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Health and Children to promote the testing of pregnant women for HIV on a routine basis, in view of the fact that recent advances in medical treatment reduces the transmission rate of HIV from the pregnant woman to her unborn child.

I have also received notice from Senator Burke of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Environment and Local Government to allow local authorities discretion in relation to members' non-attendance at council meetings due to illness.

I have also received notice from Senator Costello of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education and Science to ensure that maintenance grants are made available to the thousands of students attending post-leaving certificate courses on terms similar to those prevailing in the rest of the higher education sector.

I have also received notice from Senator Tom Hayes of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Agriculture and Food to examine the huge potential for job creation in Tipperary town and its hinterland by Tipperary Co-op in a proposed joint venture and if she will sanction the necessary grant assistance from Forbairt to enable this project to proceed in the light of the recent major job losses in Tipperary.

I regard the matters raised by Senators Henry and Burke as suitable for discussion on the Adjournment and they will be taken at the conclusion of business. Senators Costello and Tom Hayes may give notice on another day of the matters they wishes to raise.
