Vol. 155 No. 4

Business of Seanad.

I have notice from Senator Costello that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Environment and Local Government to implement his party's pre-election commitment to tax plastic bags.

I have also received notice from Senator Henry of the following matter:

In view of the serious nature of the reasons given by the member of the Insurance Ombudsman Council for his resignation from the council and these reasons having been made public by way of an open letter to the Tánaiste and the press, the need for the Tánaiste to outline the steps she has taken to satisfy herself that there is no veracity in these reasons.

I have also received notice from Senator Tom Hayes of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education and Science to immediately sanction the employment of a resource teacher for John the Baptist National School, Cashel, County Tipperary which was applied for last year and remains outstanding.

I have also received notice from Senator O'Meara of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform to take into account the serious situation arising from the fact that, in the case of the review of sentences of various offenders, including those convicted of murder, that the criteria used by the Sentence Review Group does not include any consideration of the views of the family of the victim of that offender.

I regard the matters raised by the Senators as suitable for discussion on the Adjournment. I have selected the matters raised by Senators Costello and Henry and they will be taken at the conclusion of business. The other Senators may give notice on another day of the matters they wish to raise.
