Seanad Éireann debate -
Thursday, 18 Jun 1998

Vol. 156 No. 2

Order of Business (Resumed).

Will the Leader consider sending the congratulations of at least one Member of the House to the Taoiseach for the change in Government policy regarding working and the dole?

The Senator should not be too sure that it is a change.

A spin was put on it.

Senator Ross is well aware that this is not in order on the Order of Business.

It is an aside. However, I wonder if, while he is congratulating the Taoiseach on changing Government policy on this matter, the Leader would ask him to come to the House with the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment so that they could both give us a speech on the subject, together and in unison.

Job sharing.

Seriously, I would like the Leader to allow a debate on this subject. It will now enter the area of national debate introduced yesterday by the Tánaiste. Perhaps the Leader could initiate a debate, through a Government motion, on this subject in the next week or two.

I also wish to be associated with your welcoming remarks to the US delegation, a Chathaoirligh.

In reply to Senators Manning and Henry about taking all Stages of the Bill, it has always been my wish to deal with their express requests. There are four sections to the Bill and I understood that we had obtained agreement from the Whips. I fully agree with the sentiments expressed by Senator Manning. On the Order of Business next Tuesday, I will report back to the House in relation to the Geneva Convention, as requested by Senator Henry.

With regard to Senator Costello's question, I will certainly make time available to discuss the Murphy report at the earliest opportunity. I can agree also to grant Senator Ross's request for a debate on employment and the success of the Government in this regard.

Hear, hear.

Who will take the debate?

Our record stands on its merits and I will be only too pleased to make time available to facilitate Senator Ross at the earliest opportunity.

Order of Business agreed to.
