Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 3 Mar 1999

Vol. 158 No. 9

Business of Seanad.

I have notice from Senator Chambers that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

The need for the Government to consider holding the census on a Saturday as opposed to a Sunday so as to give a more accurate figure for the population distribution of the State.

I have also received notice from Senator Gallagher of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education and Science to institute a public inquiry into the circumstances which allowed a former teacher to sexually abuse many pupils over a number of decades, and which permitted him to continue teaching in primary and secondary schools until retirement; and the need for the Minister to ensure that proper counselling and support are available to the victims in these cases.

I have also received notice from Senator O'Meara of the following matter:

The urgent need for the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform to make funds available to ensure the immediate restoration and reopening of Nenagh courthouse, Nenagh, County Tipperary.

I regard the matters raised by the Senators as suitable for discussion on the Adjournment. I have selected Senators Chambers's and Gallagher's matters and they will be taken at the conclusion of business. Senator O'Meara may give notice on another day of the matter she wishes to raise.
