Vol. 163 No. 16

Request to move Adjournment of Seanad under Standing Order 29.

I have notice from Senator O'Toole regarding a motion he wishes to raise under Standing Order 29. I call Senator O'Toole to give notice of the motion before I give my ruling.

I draw to the attention of the House the inflation figure for April of 5.29% and ask that the House be adjourned under the terms of Standing Order 29 on the basis that the Government should give an indication of its commitment to reduce excise duties, introduce a maximum prices order and ensure that the pound in the worker's wage packet is restored in its value, that this be done in the course of the next six months, and that immediate action be taken to restore trust and confidence in the Programme for Prosperity and Fairness by being seen to act on inflation.

Out of order.

I ask the Cathaoirleach to recognise that this is a matter contemplated under Standing Order 29 and that the motion would enjoy the support of many Members of the House.

I have given careful consideration to the matter raised by Senator O'Toole, which I do not consider to be contemplated by Standing Order 29. I regret, therefore, that I have had to rule it out of order.

I regret that the Chair has ruled the matter out of order.
