Seanad Éireann debate -
Thursday, 24 May 2001

Vol. 166 No. 17

Business of Seanad.

I have received notice from Senator Costello that on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today he proposes to raise the following matter.

The need for the Minister for Education and Science to provide adequate non-teaching staff and resources to fund secondary schools to enable them to carry out their work properly.

I have received notice from Senator Glennon on the following matter.

The need for the Minister for Education and Science to intervene to ensure the retention at current levels of staffing at St. Patrick's senior school, Skerries, notwithstanding the temporary reduction in student numbers experienced in the current academic year and particularly in the light of the projected return to normal levels in the forthcoming academic year.

I have received notice from Senator Henry of the following matter.

The need for the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform to eliminate the use of padded cells in prisons.

I regard the matters raised as suitable for discussion on the Adjournment and they will be taken at the conclusion of business.

I wish to remind Senators of the amendment to Standing Order 28 contained in the report of the Committee on Procedure and Privileges which the House agreed to on Tuesday. Three Adjournment matters can now be taken in the half-hour allowed for motions on the Adjournment. A Senator has five minutes to make his contribution on the motion raised and the Minister shall be entitled to not more than five minutes to reply.
