Vol. 191 No. 3

Business of Seanad.

I have received notice from Senator Ciaran Cannon that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education and Science to give a report on the up-to-date situation regarding the provision of a new second level school in Kinvara, County Galway and in particular on the progress being made by the OPW in identifying and acquiring a site for the school.

I have also received notice from Senator Frances Fitzgerald of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education and Science to prioritise the extension and refurbishment of St. Brigid's national school, Palmerstown, Dublin 20, in light of the very poor existing conditions for students and staff and the lengthy period of time the school has waited for such refurbishment and to provide details of when he expects such work to commence.

I have also received notice from Senator Shane Ross of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education and Science to expand educational development to increase the number of non-denominational schools, thus avoiding the reinforcing of sectarian divides by separating children according to denominations during their core school hours.

I have also received notice from Senator Gerry Buttimer of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government to publish the report of the Cork Docklands Forum on the Cork Docklands.

I have also received notice from Senator Nicky McFadden of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government to approve the application for top-up funding made by Westmeath County Council.

I have also received notice from Senator John Paul Phelan of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education and Science to clarify, with regard to St. Mary's primary school, Church of Ireland, Royal Oak Road, Bagnelstown, County Carlow, when funding will be made available for commencement of construction of this premises given that the school has awaited this funding for in excess of two years.

I have also received notice from Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education and Science to provide an update on the following school building projects (details supplied) and to outline when each project will progress.

I have also received notice from Senator Paschal Donohoe of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Transport to become directly involved in the provision of resident-only car parking and park-and-ride schemes for residential areas near major sporting stadia.

I have also received notice from Senator Michael McCarthy of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Transport to outline the steps that have been taken to restore the Cork-Swansea car ferry service given its importance to the survival of the tourism industry in the south west.

I regard the matters raised by Senators as suitable for discussion on the Adjournment. I have selected the matters raised by Senators Cannon, Fitzgerald and Ross and they will be taken at the conclusion of business. The remaining Senators may give notice on another day of the matters they wish to raise.

Due to the importance of the business we discussed overnight, the Members who had their matters selected yesterday withdrew their requests in the interests of finishing the business and I agreed to take them today. I apologise to other Senators who had Adjournment matters submitted and have not been taken. I hope I will be able to facilitate them next week.
