Vol. 191 No. 4

Death of Former Clerk: Expressions of Sympathy.

Before I propose the Order of Business, I would like to pay a short tribute to the late, great Jack Tobin, who was a distinguished Clerk of this House. Jack Tobin, as we all knew him, was a hard-working, decent public servant. He served with great distinction and served as Clerk of the House from 1973 to 1987. He was Seanad returning officer on five occasions. I had the great privilege of being a candidate on four of those occasions and of winning three times out of four. Mr. Tobin set a very high standard for all of us who worked for him and the respect in which he was held by Members on all sides of the House has stood the test of time. He set standards for the House of which we have all been proud over the years. I, as Leader of the House, propose a vote of sympathy to his family on his sad passing.
