Vol. 204 No. 8

Business of Seanad

I have received notice from Senator Marc MacSharry that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Justice and Law Reform to introduce immediate legislation to increase the powers of the Garda Síochána to secure the conviction of illegal moneylenders in Irish society and offer increased protection for victims and members of the public to encourage them to come forward in cases of illegal moneylending.

I have also received notice from Senator Liam Twomey of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education and Skills to outline the timescale for a new post-primary school in Gorey, County Wexford; if all years will be accommodated from the beginning and when she expects a patron for the school to be announced.

I have also received notice from Senator Dominic Hannigan of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education and Skills to outline the progress being made in the provision of a new primary school in the Johnstown area, Navan, County Meath.

I have also received notice from Senator Jerry Buttimer of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Health and Children to make a statement on the provision of podiatry services available to persons with diabetes in Cork.

I have also received notice from Senator Nicky McFadden of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government to respond to the flooding report published in July by the Joint Committee on the Environment, Heritage and Local Government.

I have also received notice from Senator Fidelma Healy Eames of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education and Skills to clarify if she is aware that there is long-term damage to children's backs and overall posture caused by backward sloping school chairs used as standard practice in all Irish schools today.

I have also received notice from Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, in conjunction with electricity suppliers, to introduce a scheme to provide low cost electricity for small and medium enterprises for a 24 month period.

I regard the matters raised by the Senators as suitable for discussion on the Adjournment. I have selected the matters raised by Senators MacSharry, Twomey and Hannigan and they will be taken at the conclusion of business. The other Senators may give notice on another day of the matters they wish to raise.
