Vol. 217 No. 9

Business of Seanad

I have received notice from Senator Fiach Mac Conghail that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht to clarify the role of the board of the National Museum of Ireland in the recruitment and appointment of the new director of the National Museum of Ireland; whether there are changes in the job description or terms of contract as set out in the National Cultural Institutions Act 1997; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have also received notice from Senator Colm Burke of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Health to put in place a new procedure for the employment of junior doctors which would provide them with a two or three year contract rather than the current six month contract.

I have also received notice from Senator Thomas Byrne of the following matter:

The need for the Minister of Transport, Tourism and Sport to investigate whether there is adequate bus service provision in the Dublin commuter belt area.

I have also received notice from Senator Fidelma Healy Eames of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Social Protection to outline the progress regarding amendment of the Civil Registration Act 2004 to enable the Irish registration of deaths of those who die abroad.

I have also received notice from Senator Denis Landy of the following matter:

To ask the Minister for Health if he is aware that funding has been withdrawn for tutors' travel and that a tutor, delivering a suicide awareness course in the Nano Nagle Centre, Carrick-on-Suir, was withdrawn; and to request that this funding be reinstated as a matter of urgency.

I have also received notice from Senator Lorraine Higgins of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport to set out a policy programme, through the National Roads Authority, with regard to the adequate lining of all secondary and regional routes in Ireland in the interests of safety.

I have also received notice from Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education and Skills to provide details of the capital asset test implementation group's report and to refrain from including the value of agricultural lands as a capital asset in new means testing arrangements for third level maintenance grants.

I have also received notice from Senator Kathryn Reilly of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport to discuss the removal of the Expressway route 30 bus service by Bus Éireann to west Cavan towns and the criteria used in making these route decisions.

I regard the matters raised by Senators Mac Conghail, Colm Burke, Byrne, Healy Eames, Landy, Higgins and Ó Domhnaill as suitable for discussion on the Adjournment. I have selected the matters raised by Senators Mac Conghail, Colm Burke, Byrne and Healy Eames and they will be taken at the conclusion of business. Senators Landy, Higgins and Ó Domhnaill may give notice on another day of the matters they wish to raise.

I regret that I have had to rule out of order the matter raised by Senator Reilly as the Minister has no responsibility in the matter.
