Thursday, 11 Dec 2014

Vol. 236 No. 6

Business of Seanad

I have notice from Senator Mark Daly that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Health to clarify the new national structures in the HSE service plan in relation to organ donation and transplantation, and the way in which 20 new staff, who were employed following the debate during the recall of the Seanad in 2013 on the implementation of an EU directive on organ donation, are being utilised.

I have also received notice from Senator Lorraine Higgins of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport to state if he will introduce a road improvement scheme or fund for various private roads in order to improve road safety in Ireland.

I have also received notice from Senator Fidelma Healy Eames of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport to set out the reasons that any lands that are used for the proposed Dublin-Galway greenway would only be secured on a by-agreement basis with landowners and to outline the procedure, including the appeals process, anticipated in acquiring the lands.

I have also received notice from Senator Marie Moloney of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport to address the issue of young people living in rural areas, who, in the absence of public transport, are dependent on a car to get to work and who are unable to drive alone as learner drivers.

I have also received notice from Senator Averil Power of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs to state if he will reverse the 33% cut in funding for the school completion programme in recent years and protect the programme from further cuts.

I have also received notice from Senator Kathryn Reilly of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Justice and Equality to discuss SI 541 of 2014 and to comment on recent revelations that British spy agency General Communications Headquarters, GCHQ, directly tapped undersea communications cables between Ireland and Britain.

I have also received notice from Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs to make a statement in relation to ongoing funding for the Aonad Resource Centre in Ballygar, County Galway.

I have also received notice from Senator Martin Conway of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education and Skills to comment on the discontinuation of the higher certificate in business computing level 6 course by Limerick Institute of Technology at Ennis Museum, County Clare.

I regard the matters raised by the Senators as suitable for discussion on the Adjournment. I have selected the matters raised by Senators Daly, Higgins, Healy Eames and Moloney and they will be taken at the conclusion of business. Senators Power, Reilly, Ó Clochartaigh and Conway may give notice on another day of the matters they wish to raise.
