Vol. 296 No. 3

Gnó an tSeanaid - Business of Seanad

I have received notice from the following Senators that they propose to raise the following matters: Senators Tom Clonan and Michael McDowell - The need for the Minister for Justice to outline her plans for pay restoration for barristers who conduct criminal cases in the higher courts under the criminal justice legal aid scheme. Senator Sharon Keogan - The need for the Minister for Justice to make a statement on the regulation of non-government immigration services; and the need to set legal criteria which must be met by immigration consultants in order to limit and prevent exploitative immigration arrangements and aid the fight against human trafficking in Ireland. Senator Fiona O'Loughlin - The need for the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment to outline how his Department intends to support the local SME sector in south Kildare to combat the uncertainties posed by the housing crisis, skills shortages, climate change, Brexit and the current crisis in Europe. Senator Maria Byrne - The need for the Minister for Social Protection to make a statement on the steps being taken to ensure those in receipt of disability allowance are given the opportunity to re-enter the workplace without the risk of losing their welfare benefits. Senator Malcolm Byrne - The need for the Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth to outline the measures in place to recruit and retain foster carers. Senator Seán Kyne - The need for the Minister for Health to make a statement on the roll-out of Westdoc services to Moycullen and Oughterard in County Galway. Senator Paul Gavan - The need for the Minister for Justice to make a statement on community policing in Limerick. Senator John McGahon - The need for the Minister for Transport to introduce a tax-free shared mobility allowance to accelerate sustainable transport in Ireland. Senator Mary Fitzpatrick - The need for the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage to provide an update on the redevelopment and provision of 163 new homes at St. Mary’s Place, Dorset Street, Dublin 7. Senator Vincent P. Martin - The need for the Minister of State with special responsibility for heritage and electoral reform to make a statement on supporting the needs and modern requirements of the houseboat canal communities in County Kildare and throughout Ireland. Senator Erin McGreehan - The need for the Minister for Health to make a statement on the policy for testing for hereditary cancers, particularly the BRCA gene, which can cause breast cancer. Of the matters raised by the Senators suitable for discussion, I have selected Senators Tom Clonan and Michael McDowell, who are sharing time; Sharon Keogan; Fiona O'Loughlin; and Maria Byrne and they will be taken now.

I regret that I had to rule out of order the matters raised by Senators Gavan and Martin on the ground that the relevant Minister has no official responsibility in the matters raised. I regret that I had to rule out of order the matter raised by Senator McGahon on the ground that it anticipates the statements on the budget scheduled to take place in the Seanad on Tuesday, 10 October 2023. The other Senators may give notice on another day of the matters that they wish to raise.
