Gnó an tSeanaid - Business of Seanad

Members will recall that at the beginning of the day yesterday, I informed Members of the death over the weekend of the former Minister of State, county councillor and Senator, Mr. Tom Hussey. He was a native of Patch, Glenamaddy, County Galway, a place he loved dearly. He had a long and distinguished career in public service at both national and local levels. He was first elected to Dáil Éireann in 1969 to represent the people of Galway North-East. During his time in the Lower House, he served as a Minister of State in the Departments of Health, Social Welfare and Agriculture. In 1981, he was elected to Seanad Éireann on the agricultural panel and served in this House five times, remaining a Senator until 1993. After leaving Seanad Éireann, he remained active in politics and was a valued member of his party, Fianna Fáil.

Mr. Hussey was deeply committed to his area, people and family, but above all to helping the people he served. He was passionate about agriculture and as a dedicated farmer, strived tirelessly to improve the lives of farmers all over the country.

At this sad time for his family, my thoughts are with his wife, Bridie; his sons, James, Thomas, Paul and Ciarán; his daughters, Sinéad and Triona; his sisters, Annie and Rosaleen; his grandchildren; extended family and friends; members of the Fianna Fáil Party; and all those who will mourn his loss. On my behalf and that of Senators, I express my condolences and sympathy to his family.

I ask the Leader to propose the Order of Business, at the end of which she will move a motion expressing our sympathy and sadness on the passing of our colleague and friend, former Senator Tom Hussey.
