SELECT COMMITTEE ON AGRICULTURE, FOOD AND THE MARINE debate -
Wednesday, 16 Feb 2000

Vol. 3 No. 1

Report of Select Committee.

I propose that the Clerk should send the following message to the Clerk of the Dáil:

The Select Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine has considered the National Beef Assurance Scheme Bill, 1999 [Seanad] and has made amendments thereto. The Bill is hereby reported to the Dáil.

Report agreed to.

Ordered to report to the Dáil accordingly.

I thank the Minister, his officials and Deputies Connaughton, Upton and Brady for their contributions.

On behalf of the Department, I thank the committee, particularly Deputies Connaughton and Upton, for facilitating the amendments to this Bill. The Bill was introduced in July and we accepted a number of amendments in the Seanad. It then went through the Dáil and will now return there for Report and Final Stages. It will underpin beef assurance and food safety. Ireland is the first member state in the EU to enact such legislation to safeguard our food safety regime.

The Select Committee adjourned at 4.25 p.m.
