SELECT COMMITTEE ON ENTERPRISE AND SMALL BUSINESS debate -
Wednesday, 12 Jul 2000

Vol. 3 No. 18

Report of Select Committee.

In accordance with Standing Order 79B the following message will be sent by the Clerk to the Clerk of the Dáil:

The Select Committee on Enterprise and Small Business has completed its consideration of the Insurance Bill, 1999, and has made amendments thereto.

Report agreed to.

Ordered to report to the Dáil accordingly.

I thank the Minister of State, Deputy Treacy, for his attendance together with his officials Mr. Gerry Murphy, Mr. Turlough O'Molloy, Ms Ann Troy and MsBríd Bannon. I thank them for their support and input to the committee. I also thank the Bills Office and the other Oireachtas staff who have serviced this meeting, the committee Clerk and his support staff. I thank the members of the committee and the substitute members who ensured we progressed these two Bills.

On behalf of my officials, the Department and on my own behalf, I sincerely thank the Chair and the committee for their dedicated, intensive efforts not only today but on the work done on the Bill to date. Members have given us a lot of work to do for Report Stage. I assure the committee that my officials and I will work assiduously with the Attorney General, his team and the Parliamentary Draftsman throughout the summer and hopefully we will come back to Report Stage in the autumn session renewed with vigour, determined to ensure we put before the people the best legislation possible pertaining to the insurance industry.

The success of the committee today and the work it has done is a tribute to it. It shows the work that can be done in committee despite the fact that the public may think we are on holidays.

I thank the Chairman and the Minister of State for the swift passing of the Bills through Committee Stage. We have raised a number of fundamental points which have caused concern within the industry and I look forward to seeing amendments on Report Stage. Hopefully we can resolve these issues without calling votes.

This may be the last meeting of the committee before the summer recess. I know there are meetings planned for next week but they will not take place in select committee. I wish members well and hope those who are taking a break will have a well earned rest. On the day that is in it, let us hope the twelfth passes peacefully now that we have peace on this island.

The Select Committee adjourned at 2.03 p.m. sine die.
