Select Committee on Finance and General Affairs debate -
Thursday, 9 Nov 1995

Business of Select Committee.

Clerk to the Select Committee

I will take nominations for a temporary chairman in the absence of the Chairman.

I propose Deputy Connor.

Clerk to the Select Committee

As there are no other nominations I ask Deputy Connor to take the Chair.

Yesterday we completed section 40 and we will shortly be moving on to section 41. I suggest that the committee continue its work until 10.30 a.m. and take sections 41 to 50, inclusive, with all the amendments. The Order of Business in the Dáil is scheduled for 10.30 a.m. and it is suggested that we break at that time and resume at 11.15 a.m. It is also suggested that we deal with sections 51 to 59 between 11.15 a.m. and 12 o'clock and between 12 o'clock and 1 o'clock we should be able to deal with sections 60 to conclusion. Is that agreed?

That is very reasonable. The Acting Chairman is setting a target and, considering the efficient manner in which he worked yesterday, I am sure he will achieve it. I propose that we adhere, except in some exceptional circumstances, to the timetable as outlined.

That is provided that it does not mean Members have to keep speaking until we reach the time stated.

I have no problem with that but we have set a definite time limit for concluding the business which is 1 o'clock.

That is reasonable.

If some amendments are not dealt with at 1 o'clock we will have a wrap up motion at that stage. Is that agreed? Agreed.
