SELECT COMMITTEE ON JUSTICE, DEFENCE AND EQUALITY debate -
Tuesday, 25 Oct 2011

Business of Select Committee

I ask members to turn off their mobile telephones completely because they interfere with the sound recording equipment, even on silent mode.

I take note of what the Minister for Justice and Equality has said in the Dáil regarding the tragic death of Garda Ciaran Jones in County Wicklow. I am sure members will join me in sending our condolences to his family, colleagues and community.

I express my deepest sympathy to the family of Garda Ciaran Jones. It is a major loss for his mother, father, brother and sister, as well as for the Garda Síochána. He died while trying to help other people. This morning, I travelled to Donnycarney to meet residents whose homes were severely damaged in last night's floods. Even though they were worried about the cost of the damage, they all commented on the death of this young garda.

I, too, express my sympathy on this terrible tragedy. Garda Jones was performing a public service when he died.

We send our sympathies to his family and colleagues.
