Select Committee on Social Affairs debate -
Wednesday, 19 Mar 1997

Business of Select Committee.

The first item is the duration of the meeting. It has been suggested, given that Members must be in the House until 11.45 p.m. that the committee should use this time to deal with most, if not all, of the Bill. Is that agreed?

The Minister has taken on board many of the amendments. If the committee is making good progress, perhaps we could consider the position at 8.30 p.m.

We will not continue for the sake of it. We will consider what progress has been made. It is possible the meeting will be interrupted by a division in the House, which will give Members a break. We can review progress later.

We are anxious to deal with the Bill.

Equal Status Bill, 1997: Committee Stage.

Section 1 agreed to.
