SECTION 257.

Question proposed : " That Section 257 stand part of the Bill."

As regards the point which I think is troubling Deputy Cowan, I think it might be possible to redraft and modify this section, which was taken from the 1923 Act. We could possibly omit the reference to an oath, as a statutory declaration should ordinarily be sufficient for pay purposes. Offences would then be punishable under the Statutory Declarations Act, 1938, and there would be no necessity for any reference to perjury. If the Deputy will leave it at that, I will see what can be done.
