Special Committee Factories Bill, 1954 debate -
Thursday, 3 Feb 1955

SECTION 39.

I have an explanation to make. Section 39, sub-section (1) (a) (iii), requires that steam boilers shall have attached a correct steam pressure gauge to indicate the pressure of steam in the boiler in pounds per square inch. I want to ask the committee if they would agree to delete the words " in pounds per square inch ". I think that on the whole it would be better not to require the compusory use of the British unit of measurement but to allow employers to use the metric system if they so wish. There is a commission sitting at the moment in regard to the metric system. If this change were not made, it might require an amendment to the Act later. The 1901 Act leaves open the unit of measure to be used. Similar considerations will arise in connection with the same words in relation to steam receivers and air receivers in Sections 40 and 41.

Mr. Lemass

Do you propose now to delete the words?

If the Committee will agree, I now propose, in sub-section (1), page 25, line 20, to delete " in pounds per square inch ".

Amendment agreed to.
Section 39, as amended, agreed to.
