477 Mr. S. Power asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of non-nationals who are serving time in prison here; the nationalities of the persons involved; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8505/04]

On yesterday's date, there was a total of 281 foreign nationals in custody. This equated to approximately 8.5% of those in custody on that date. Of the 281 persons, 195 are serving sentences for criminal offences, 52 persons are remanded in custody on criminal charges and a further 34 persons are awaiting deportation.

The nationalities of the persons involved are set out in the following table:
