Pat Carey

Question:

185 Mr. Carey asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason a school (details supplied) in Dublin 11 has not been approved for two prefabricated classrooms in view of the fact that the professional fees for this project have already been paid for by his Department and planning permission has been received from the local authority; and if he will make a statement on the matter. On 23 July 2002 the school building section of my Department informed the board of management of the school to which the Deputy refers to appoint an architect to prepare the necessary documentation for the siting of two small portacabins on the school grounds. At the same time, the board was informed that prior approval for seeking tenders would be required so as to ensure that sufficient funds were available to deliver the project. School planning section has considered all applications for temporary accommodation. In the context of the available funding and the number of applications for that funding, it was not possible to approve all applications received and only those with an absolute and demonstrated need for additional accommodation were approved. The application from the school to which the Deputy refers was not successful on this occasion.
