1230 Mr. Carey asked the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government if his attention has been drawn to the discovery of significant archaeological artefacts from the Viking period in the vicinity of a cemetery (details supplied) in Dublin 11 during the summer period of 2004; if building will be suspended on the site until a full archaeological investigation is carried out; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The discovery was made in the course of licensed archaeological excavations being carried out on a development site, on foot of a condition attached to the grant of planning permission by Dublin City Council. The site has been inspected by an archaeologist from my Department and the archaeological excavation and recording of the site is ongoing.
