Written answers (Question to Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism)

The historic vessel, theAsgard, by arrangement with the National Museum of Ireland, is in safe keeping at John’s Road, Inchicore, under the care of the Office of Public Works. The vessel is an archaeological object as defined by the National Monuments Act 1930 as amended by the National Monuments (Amendment) Act 1994 and, as such, my Department takes responsibility for its preservation.

The Office of Public Works is carrying out a feasibility study for a new permanent exhibition space-location to house theAsgard. Further progress on the conservation of the vessel and putting it on public view will depend on the resources available to my Department in 2005.
