View answerI have been informed by the Garda authorities, who are responsible for the detailed allocation of resources, including personnel, that the number of gardaí unavailable for service due to illness, ill health, incapacity or otherwise on 17 October 2005 was 88. This refers to those members of the Garda Síochána who are on long-term sick leave. I am further advised that the total number of other gardaí who are absent through illness on any specific day is not readily available and that this information could only be obtained by the expenditure of a disproportionate amount of Garda time and resources.
