Ruairí Quinn

Question:

511 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government if legislation or regulations will be introduced to permit local authorities to request the occupiers of houses and other buildings to mark their houses with such numbers as the local authority may approve and to renew such numbers as often as they become obliterated or defaced in view of the fact that the Towns Improvement Clauses Act 1847 and the Dublin Improvement Act 1849 have been repealed by the Local Government Act 2001; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Part VII of the Local Government Act 1994 provides local authorities with wide ranging powers to make by-laws, including the general power to make by-laws in the interests of the common good of the local community. Matters such as the regulation and controlling of the display of house numbers, if not provided for under specific legislation, may be addressed by local authorities in this way. I understand that the house numbering provisions of the Dublin Improvement Act 1849 are still in force in Dublin City.
