Questions (126)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh

Question:

151 Aengus Ó Snodaigh asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he views with concern the extension of the US blockade against Cuba into Mexico, as evidenced by an incident in Mexico City in February 2006 in which a US subsidiary hotel, following pressure from the US authorities to observe their Helms-Burton Law on the embargo against Cuba, refused services to Cuban nationals. I am aware of the incident to which the Deputy refers. The Government, in common with its EU partners, regards the extra-territorial provisions of the Helms-Burton Act as contrary to international law. The Council of the European Union has adopted legal measures protecting EU enterprises against the effects of extra-territorial legislation adopted by a third country.
