335 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Education and Science further to Question No. 451 of 29 November 2005, if she has received the recommendations from the National Council for Curriculum Assessment with regard to placing more emphasis on oral Irish as part of the senior cycle reform; and if she will make a statement on the matter. Leaving certificate Irish will be one of the first subjects to be reviewed by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment, NCCA, as part of its work on developing senior cycle. This process will involve reviewing the assessment methods as well as updating the syllabus and embedding specified key skills. My view is that we need to work towards improvements in the area of spoken Irish and that giving greater weight to the oral Irish component in the leaving certificate examinations would be effective in this regard.
