Question:388 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Transport the programme for increased capacity of the rail line through Sallins, Newbridge and Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9455/06]
View answerSignificant service improvements are planned for the Kildare commuter route over the coming years. Transport 21 provides the funding for the implementation of the Kildare route project. The project involves the quadrupling of a critical section of the Kildare line between Cherry Orchard and Hazelhatch. The project will allow separation of long distance and commuter services and improve speed, capacity and frequencies for commuter, regional and intercity services.
The public inquiry into the project was held from 24 January 2006 to 2 February 2006. I will make a decision on the granting of the railway order after I receive the inspector's report into the public inquiry. Subject to the completion of the railway order process, construction work on the project will begin toward the end of 2006 and is due for completion at the end of 2010. The company also proposes to expand its suburban rolling stock to meet the demands on all routes into Dublin, including the increased level of service on the Kildare commuter route.
