76 Mr. Quinn asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of cases detected by the gardaí of cars with exhaust systems in excess of noise pollution levels in respect of the latest year for which figures are available; the number of such cases where prosecutions were initiated; the number of convictions secured; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Road traffic legislation is a matter for my colleague, the Minister for Transport. The law pertaining to exhaust systems on vehicles is contained in section 29(1) of the Road Traffic (Construction, Equipment and Use of Vehicles) Regulations 1963, as amended.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the following table shows the number of proceedings commenced and convictions for an offence under section 29(1) up to 12 October 2006.
