The accommodation needs of the school referred to by the Deputy are under consideration by my Department. In order to ensure that the appropriate level of accommodation is provided, officials in the School Planning Section are currently assessing the long-term projected staffing figure on which the accommodation needs will be based.

Progress on the project will be considered in the context of the School Building and Modernisation Programme 2006-2010.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 286 to 310, inclusive, together.

I am pleased to inform the Deputy that my Department is delivering a record school building programme which is transforming the standard of school accommodation throughout the country. Details of the rolling series of my announcements on the programme are available on my Department's website.

Between 2000 and 2005 my Department invested over €2 billion on educational infrastructure on over 6,500 individual school projects. This investment catered for the construction of new schools, large scale extensions and refurbishments, a wide range of projects under the Summer Works Scheme and a variety of other schemes. The investment in 2006 of over €500m will fund the delivery of over 1300 projects in schools all over the country.

My Department's capital envelope of €3.9 billion will enable my Department to continue to take a proactive and planned approach to the provision and modernisation of school accommodation throughout the country.

Mary Upton

Question:

318 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Education and Science if a school (details supplied) in County Meath will be included on the building programme for 2007; if unresolved issues over title for the proposed site will prevent it from being included in the programme; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [37029/06]

View answer

The acquisition of a site with clear title is the first key step in the delivery of new school projects. The Deputy will appreciate the inappropriateness of developing out plans for new schools on lands in any other circumstances. The Department is working to resolve the title issues which have arisen on the site in question through the Chief State Solicitors office.
