615 Deputy Joe McHugh asked the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government the position regarding an abbey (details supplied) in County Donegal. [25333/07]
View answerThe abbey is listed on the statutory Record of Monuments and Places for County Donegal. Section 12(3) of the National Monuments (Amendment) Act 1994 provides for the protection of monuments and places listed on the statutory Record of Monuments and Places. Two months notification in writing must be given to the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government of any proposed works at or in relation to such monuments or places. It is understood that the local authority owns the graveyard in which the recorded monument is located. Both the care and maintenance of the graveyard and the protection of the monument are matters for the local authority in the first instance. My Department will draw the concerns relating to the condition of the monument to the attention of the county council and is available to provide archaeological advice in the matter if required.
