416 Deputy Brian Hayes asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of the 270 autism units established by his Department within primary schools that have more than a ratio of one teacher and two special needs assistants to six children; the number that have more than six children; and if he will make a statement on the matter. View answerThe National Council for Special Education (NCSE) is responsible, through its network of local Special Educational Needs Organisers, for allocating teachers and special needs assistants (SNAs) to schools to support children with special educational needs, including autism.
Special classes for children with autism are staffed by a teacher and a minimum of 2 SNAs for every 6 children. Additional SNAs may be sanctioned depending on the needs of individual pupils.
