280 Deputy Thomas P. Broughan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will report on Operation Gem; the cost to date and the number of gardaí involved; the number of persons arrested and charged under this operation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10030/09]
View answerI am advised by the Garda authorities that Operation ‘Gem' is an initiative which was established to specifically target a number of people engaged in organised criminal activities particularly in the Dublin Area. To date this operation has resulted in proceedings being commenced against eighteen people for organised crime-related offences, has led to the recovery of a number of firearms and ammunition and the seizure of drugs, with an estimated street value of €15m. However, as this operation is ongoing it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.
