87 Deputy Kathleen Lynch asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of applications received to date in 2009 for early retirement from members of the gardaí; the way this compares to the same period in each year from 2002; his views on reports that a significant number of senior gardaí are planning to take early retirement as a result of the public service pension levy; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I am informed by the Garda authorities that the number of Gardaí who have voluntarily retired from An Garda Síochána in the first three months of each year from 2002-2009 was as set out in the table hereunder.

It is not possible to identify particular factors in decisions made by members to take early retirement, but clearly the rate of retirement will continue to be kept under review.
