711 Deputy Simon Coveney asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform when the next intake of trainee Garda will take place at Templemore college, County Tipperary; the number of trainees who will be taken in; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [33721/09]
View answerAs the Minister for Finance has made clear, the moratorium on recruitment and promotions in the Public Service applies to the Garda Síochána, both sworn members and civilian support staff. By its nature, it does not apply to the Garda Reserve, whose members are unpaid volunteers who do not occupy public service posts. I intend to review the position during the course of 2010 in consultation with the Garda Commissioner and my colleague, the Minister for Finance.
