View answerEnsuring value for money in terms of government investment is always important but it is particularly critical in times of economic challenge. It has long been established that value for money is achieved through focusing state assistance on exporting companies rather than on those selling to the domestic market. The provision of assistance to indigenous companies that are not export-oriented generates significant levels of displacement, deadweight and market distortion. Ireland's economic success is intrinsically linked to Irish industry achieving sales in international markets. I therefore have no plans to expand the remit of Enterprise Ireland to incorporate indigenous companies that are not export-orientated.
