188 Deputy Fergus O’Dowd asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of gardaí by rank and by Garda station for all of the new constituency of Louth, which includes parts of east Meath, for each of the past three years; if he will increase the Garda numbers in view of the increase in population; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I have been informed by the Garda Commissioner that the personnel strength of the Louth Garda Division, on 31 October 2009, 31 December 2008, 2007 and 2006 was as set out in the table hereunder:

It should be noted that prior to the formation of the Louth Division in June 2008, the Louth Division formed part of the Louth/Meath Division.

Responsibility for the allocation of personnel rests with the Garda Commissioner, in consultation with his senior management team. Resource levels are constantly monitored, in conjunction with crime trends and other demands made on An Garda Síochána, and are kept under review.
