23 Deputy Charlie McConalogue asked the Minister for Education and Skills the number of primary schools and pupils not under religious patronage in the 1996/97 school year and in the current school year; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5542/11]
View answerThe Department's records indicate that in the 1996/97 school year there were 43 primary schools that were not under religious patronage. The combined enrolment for these schools in 1996/1997 was circa 5,340 pupils. In the 2009/10 school year there were 130 primary schools that were not under religious patronage. The combined enrolment for these schools in 2009/2010 was circa 22,734 pupils. The finalised data in respect of the current school year is not yet available.
