The pier at Coolaghy, Clifden is owned by Galway County Council and the responsibility for its repair and maintenance lies with the local authority in the first instance. Earlier this year, however, my Department invited coastal local authorities to submit applications in respect of priority harbour development projects for inclusion in its 2011 Fishery Harbour and Coastal Infrastructure Development Programme. My Department received an application from Galway County Council for funding for a total of 3 projects, of which Coolaghy pier was identified as the 3rd project in order of priority.

Having regard to its prioritisation and the fact that the required planning permission was not in place, the project was not selected for funding by the Evaluation Committee. Any application for funding in future years by Galway County Council will be given consideration subject to available exchequer funding and overall national priorities.
