In August, 2001, the current Foster Care Allowance Scheme came into effect. The weekly rates applicable with effect from 1st August, 2001 were €254 for children under 12 years of age and €279 for children aged 12 years and over. The current rates payable are €325 for children under 12 years of age and €352 for children aged 12 years and over. The scheme is administered by the Health Service Executive.

Prior to August, 2001, foster carers received a separate foster care allowance from the health boards and a payment under the Orphans Pension or Orphans Allowance Scheme under the Social Welfare Act, 1995 from the then Department of Social Welfare. The revised Foster Care Allowance Scheme incorporated both payments into the one foster care allowance.
