View answerThe construction of a new forensic science laboratory was to be funded from the Vote of the Office of Public Works. As the Deputy is no doubt aware, the appalling financial legacy inherited from the previous Government has placed significant restrictions on available funding. The demands on the capital envelope available to the Office of Public Works have required them to prioritise urgent public projects such as flood defences. Hence, the funding is not available to proceed with the construction of a new forensic science laboratory at this stage.
My Department is now examining what alternative options may be available in this regard and how the needs of the forensic science laboratory might best be met having regard to the obligation of my Department to contribute to the overall reduction in public expenditure that must be achieved in the public interest in order to enable our State to regain its economic sovereignty.
