417 Deputy Jonathan O’Brien asked the Minister for Defence when the decision to close Clancy Barracks, Dublin, was approved by him; when the offer for sale by public tender was issued; the number of bids received; when the preferred tender was accepted; when the sale was completed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. View answerOn 15 July 1998 the then Government approved a programme of closure and sale of six barracks, including Clancy Barracks, which were considered surplus to military requirements. Clancy Barracks was advertised by the selling agents, Hamilton Osborne King, for sale by public tender on 14 June 2001. Two bids were received, both of which were considered too low to permit acceptance and the property remained on the open market.
In June, 2002 the Department accepted an offer from Florence Properties Ltd for the purchase of Clancy Barracks in the sum of €25.4 million, following detailed consideration of the matter and receipt of confirmation from the selling agents that no other party which expressed an interest in the property was prepared to make a higher bid. The sale of the barracks to Florence Properties Ltd. was completed on 26 March 2004.
