The European Union are progressing proposals to amend the EU legislation on the minimum level of training of seafarers in line with the latest amendments made by the International Maritime Organisation to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers ("the STCW Convention"). It is intended that our national regulations in this regard, the Merchant Shipping (Training and Certification) Regulations 2007-2010, will be amended later in 2012 when the EU legislation has been finalised and the certification of ratings as able seafarer deck in line with Regulation II/2 of the STCW Convention will then proceed.
