View answerThe medical criteria for fitness to drive which relate to eyesight are defined in EU legislation, as transposed into Irish law by the Road Traffic (Licensing of Drivers) (Amendment) (No. 2) Regulations 2010 (S.I. No. 544 of 2010). I have no discretion to intervene in any individual case. It is open to the individual to ask for retesting of their eyesight or for reconsideration of an application for a licence if they believe that they have not been treated in accordance with the legislation.
